History Of Menstrual Cups
The first usable Menstrual Cup was invented and patented by Leona Chalmers in 1937. Menstrual Cups have had a rough path to finally being accepted by menstruators across the world. The reason behind their initial unpopularity is deeply rooted in the fact that they need to be inserted inside the vagina to be used. This raised doubts in the mind of many when they were first launched because a common misconception was formed that virginity and menstrual cups don't go hand in hand. To this day, there is a constant heated debate between menstrual cup users and menstrual cup non-users as to whether menstrual cups are safe for the virgin population or not.
There are also commercial reasons behind the unpopularity of menstrual cups. Since pharmaceutical companies and hygiene companies can generate more profits from the consumers buying monthly supplies, they have shown less interest in promoting and producing menstrual cups. This is the reason why information about Menstrual cups is not as widespread as the information about other menstrual products.
Over the years menstruators have come forward with many concerns about menstrual cups that have not been all that well handled. Menstruators showed concerns when it comes to getting a toxic shock from menstrual cups. But extensive research and studies show that TSS or Toxic Shock Syndrome is rarer in menstrual cup users than in tampon users.
Menstrual cups do not only promote autonomy while menstruating, but they also promote healthier and more hygienic periods. With more information coming out and with more people being educated about menstrual cups, there can be seen a brighter future for menstrual cups which will finally set them free of their rough past and years of unacceptance.
